ASID New Zealand Skype Riia

Hi and Welcome back!

The above photo was taken of me recently when I presented my life story and artwork at the ASID (Australian Society of Intellectual Disabilities) 2011 Spring Conference.

It was very exciting! I was their first ever ''Skype'' Presenter. It was fun presenting live into New Zealand, from Canada.

I could see my audience over the laptop and I could see myself in a little window in one of the corners.

It is a great way to interact with people far away.

I love presenting over Skype and hope to do many more, with Skype it could be anywhere in the world.

Scarlet Headband

Hi and welcome back. I confess I have never liked headbands. I have always found them uncomfortable. So you are probably wondering why I am wearing one in this painting Scarlett Headband.

The answer is primarily artistic; I was trying to think of new objects that I could add to my collection of costumes and props for my art. I thought ‘well I don't like headbands but they would be useful for providing something to have in my hair that would show contrast’ (light/dark).

Since I have almost black hair I thought that I should get a headband that is bright, and so I chose this bright red one. The headband is bright red with white flowers on it but I wonder how the painting would feel if the headband was a different colour.

White Fan

Welcome back!

When I was little and suffering with my OCD in a peculiar way I would find various everyday objects comforting.

That feeling shielded me; like how a child hides under the blankets away from the ''Bed Monster''. I would use these objects to cover myself from these thoughts. Like hiding behind an object, so in this painting White Fan I am practically hiding behind this fan.

Strangely I felt that this object would bring me into better thoughts. Like a toddler with a blanket to me I have objects of comfort objects that the bad thoughts can't get by. Perhaps you have similar experiences?

Blue Hat

Hi and welcome to my first blog entry. For my fist entry I will describe this painting titled Blue Hat.

I enjoy dressing up for my portraits and I have a whole closet full of costumes that I have collected for the specific purpose of my art.

I love hats. This hat that I am wearing is not in fact really blue, but black. Being known by family and friends for my love of hats and unusual hats at that, a family friend found this hat that I guess looked like a “Riia hat”. This black hat is made out of a strange black stringy material; it was made in the 1930's.

So for my first entry here is something that you know about me...I like strange hats. Does this make me an eccentric artist?
